Ipswich captain Morsi has declared that he will not take the rainbow armband in support of LGBTQ+ (LGBT+) inclusion.
British media ‘Sports Bible’ reported on the 2nd (Korea time) that “Ipswich Town made a statement after captain Sam Morsi decided not to wear the rainbow armband in the Premier League match against Nottingham Forest.”
From Nov. 29 to Dec. 5, clubs in the Premier League will show their support for LGBTQ+ inclusion in the wake of Stonewall’s 2024 Rainbow Race campaign. During this time, the league and clubs will show their all-year efforts toward equality, diversity, and inclusion, with captains of both matches wearing rainbow armbands.
Meanwhile, Morsi, the captain of Ipswich, was the only one of the 20 captains in the Premier League who did not wear a rainbow armband in the match between Ipswich and Nottingham Forest on the 1st (Korea time).
Ipswich later said it was for religious reasons because Morsi is a devout Muslim. In a statement highlighting efforts to embrace LGBTQ people, the club explained that it respected Morsi’s decision not to wear the rainbow armband.
A club spokesperson told The Mirror: “Ipswich Town Football Club is committed to becoming an inclusive club welcoming everyone. We proudly support the Rainbow Race campaign in the Premier League and stand with the LGBTQ+ community in promoting equality and acceptance.”
토토사이트 꽁머니 continued, “During this year’s campaign, the club’s men’s and women’s first-team players visited the foundation’s weekly LGBTQ+ football sessions and made a joint pledge for solidarity and inclusion with Nottingham Forest ahead of Sunday’s game. Various additional initiatives are planned around the home game against Crystal Palace on the 4th (Korea time), including occupying the stadium’s big screen before kick-off.”
He also said, “At the same time, we respect captain Sam Morsi’s decision not to wear the Rainbow captain’s armband due to his religious beliefs. We will continue to create an environment where everyone is cherished and respected both inside and outside the stadium.”
Moss has talked about the importance of his faith before. In an interview with the Korea Professional Football Association last year, he said, “Faith balances me out. I see a lot of cases where young players consume themselves too much and fear comes to them. Faith opens the way to escape from fear in that it allows us to see the bigger picture.”
