After overcoming his release and invincibility, Song Eun-beom, a professional baseball Samsung Lions pitcher who returned to the professional stage after a tryout and participated in the postseason for the first time in four years, came down the mound without catching a single batter.
Song, who played in 680 games in the first division until last year and posted 88 wins, 95 losses, 27 saves and 57 holds (average ERA of 4.57), has been waiting for calls from other teams by conducting individual training to extend his active duty instead of retiring after receiving notice of release from LG in November last year. He also applied for a tryout for JTBC’s baseball entertainment program “The Greatest Baseball League.” After joining the team, Song pitched in nine games and posted an ERA of 1.08 with two holds.
Song and 꽁머니 told reporters ahead of the first playoff game against LG on Tuesday, “I just think about not causing inconvenience. If I did it from the beginning, it would be considered a bonus game because I had a hard time for a year, but I feel very sorry for the players since I came back after a month.”
He also added, “I don’t know how the coaching staff will use me, but as much as you put me in the entry, it’s not a nuisance and there’s a lot of pressure to repay your faith.”
Song took the mound as the second pitcher after starting pitcher Danny Reyes, with two outs and runners on the first and second bases in the seventh inning with a 7-1 lead. He was hit with his left hand by Moon. He threw it quickly to first base, but Moon had already passed it.
The trainer checked Song’s condition on the mound and replaced him with left-hander Lee Seung-hyun. A club official said, “Song has been replaced to protect the player as he still has numbness in his left hand. There are no plans for hospital treatment.”
Samsung beat LG 10-4 to gain the upper hand. In the best-of-five playoff series, the winning team has a 75.7 percent chance of advancing to the Korean Series. This gives Samsung an advantage by winning the first playoff game.
On Song’s current condition, coach Park Jin-man said, “I was hit by the inside of my glove while catching. I don’t think it will be too much of a hindrance.”
